Phase separation
A
dark brown chemical paste is used to detect water or separation. It turns yellow
if there is phase separation or bright red if there is water. If either of these
colors show, a sample is then taken from the bottom of the tank for evidence.
Events
Phase
This
happens during the time that there must be 10% alcohol blended into the
gasoline. It can cause some expensive repairs ($400 to $600) and in extreme
cases can ruin an engine. Phase separation can happen with as little as 15
gallons of water in a 10,000 gallon storage tank. The water in the tank will
draw the alcohol from the gasoline and lay on the bottom of the tank. This can
also happen if there is more than 12% alcohol in the gasoline. Your car will
loose power and run ratty. Shut the car off immediately to prevent engine
damage. If you believe that is what has happened to your car or if a mechanic verifies it, call Weights & Measures
immediately at 625-6611, if you bought
the gasoline in the city limits. Time is of the essence. If the station gets a
new load then problem will be self correcting at the station and there will be
no proof that is the problem with your vehicle.

the clear separation at the bottom. Picture has been darkened for contrast.
